In observance of National Foster Care Month, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office is collecting new or very gently used suitcases, duffel bags, and backpacks throughout the month of May. They are partnering with Lee County Department of Human Resources to make these bags available to youth entering the foster care system or moving between foster homes within Lee County.
Many youths who enter foster care do not have a suitcase, so they have to carry their belongings in trash bags. The Lee County Sheriff's Office wants to change this. All the bags collected will be given directly to Lee County Department of Human Resources so that they are available for social workers 24 hours to help ease some of the trauma youth may experience and maintain a feeling of dignity.
Bags can be dropped off at the Lee County Sheriff's Office, 1900 Frederick Rd., Opelika, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm CST. For more information, email jhenderson@leecountysheriff.org.
