In the year 2000, Sheriff Jay Jones along with the Chiefs of police from the cities of Auburn and Opelika decided to combine their resources and formed the “Lee County SWAT Team”.
In the year 2000, Sheriff Jay Jones along with the Chiefs of police from the cities of Auburn and Opelika decided to combine their resources and formed the “Lee County SWAT Team”. This countywide tactical unit comprises officers from the two cities as well as the Sheriff’s Office with each department responsible for the personnel it places on the team.
The mission of the Lee County SWAT Team is to provide a highly trained, skilled and well equipped resource for Lee County law enforcement departments to utilize in the handling of critical incidents or special situations. The main purpose of combining department teams was to increase man power, increase equipment availability, and standardize training for tactical teams in Lee County. The Lee County SWAT team supports other divisions within the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Opelika Police Department, the Auburn Police Division and any other law enforcement agency requesting a tactical response to a critical incident.
The Lee County SWAT team is also joined by highly trained members of the medical community. Several paramedics and doctors are members of the team and provide emergency care to the deputies/officers if needed. These medical professionals donate their time and efforts to this cause to ensure that any team member or individual that is injured has prompt medical care.
The team trains two days a month with each department assigned days that they are responsible for the training. It is the responsibility of each department to have their personnel available to attend training. In addition, each department is responsible for outfitting their personnel with any equipment or uniforms that are needed.
