The Administrative Division of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office provides services and information to the public in person at our office or via telephone. Services include pistol permit applications, fingerprinting, local background checks, bail bond information, and general agency services offered to Lee County residents.
Communications, also known as Dispatch, is the first point of contact that many people in the community will have in an emergency. Communications is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Communications Officers work 12-hour shifts on a rotation of four days on, four days off. During their shifts, they are responsible for answering both emergency and non-emergency calls from the community on multiple lines and routing deputies, medical assistance, or fire departments as needed. Simply put, when you call 9-1-1, the Communications Officers are the caring individuals that answer the phone and get help to you.
Local background checks for county residents are done from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. The cost is $3.00 and is cash only. They are done only as a request for employment or housing and must be accompanied by a signed waiver on the requesting agency’s letterhead. The individual must also produce a valid form of identification such as an Alabama driver’s license, state-issued ID, or current passport. There will be no individual background checks given to anyone without this information. Background checks for residents of Auburn or Opelika will need to visit their city’s police department.
If you would like to run a criminal background check on yourself, we have forms that can be sent to Montgomery for that information at a cost of $25.00. This check will take 6 to 8 weeks.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office provides fingerprinting services Monday through Friday each week, 8–11am and 1–4:30pm. For this service, the individual must have a fingerprint card and a valid form of identification such as an Alabama driver’s license, state-issued ID, or current passport. The cost of this service is $5.00, cash only. It is best to bring correct change. If for any reason a reprint is necessary, we will do it at no charge if the original prints were done by our office less than 6 months prior.
Cards must be printed on cardstock and are also available for purchase at office supply stores.
There will be clerks on duty from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM (Central Time) Monday through Friday to prepare bail bonds. For bonds under $3,000.00 we require only one property owner. For bonds over $3,000.00 we will require two Lee County property owners. For any bond, misdemeanor or felony, the property to be used must be in Lee County. We do not accept split bonds (property located in two separate counties).
For property to be used on any bond, the owner must have the tax assessor’s print out sheet from the tax assessor’s office. The tax assessor’s office is located at the Lee County Courthouse, 215 South 9th Street. This sheet is needed to show that the property taxes are current and the person(s) signing the bond must have a valid picture identification (Alabama driver’s license, state-issued ID, or current passport). If more than one person is listed as an owner of the property, then each owner listed must come in and sign the bond. If an owner listed on the property is deceased, a death certificate must be shown before the bond will be approved.
Bail bonds can also be done after 5:00 PM (Central Time) and on weekends by a Corrections Officer if the necessary paper work is shown.
