For Parents
Be careful about who you share your back to school photos with, especially if you include your child's teacher or school name in the photos.
Make sure your child's backpack is the right size for them and that the straps are tight so that it doesn't hang down.
Make sure to put your child's name on the inside of all of their things such as their backpack and lunch bag. Putting their name on the outside gives strangers your child's name, making it easier to gain your child's trust.
Develop a password with your kids to know that the person picking them up from school is safe if you aren't able to get them.
If your child will be alone at home after school, make sure they know how to lock the door and leave the contact information for a trusted adult in case of emergency.
For Students
Don't accept rides from anyone your parent doesn't tell you will be picking you up and that doesn't know the password you and your parents agreed on.
Put your name on your water bottle to be sure it doesn't get mixed up with your friends' since they may look the same.
Make sure that you know your parents' phone numbers and your home address in case of emergency.
Pay attention to your teachers during emergency drill.
If you see something that doesn't seem right, tell a trusted adult such as your teacher, principal, or school resource officer.
