Alabama’s new hands-free driving law (32-5A-350.1) took effect June 1, 2024.
How does this law affect drivers?
Starting June 1, 2024, drivers can be issued a citation if they are seen holding a phone for calling, texting, trying to find a song, watching a video, browsing the web, etc.
This is a secondary offense, meaning that another traffic violation must be committed first such as speeding, swerving between lanes, turning without using a signal, and things of that nature.
The penalties include:
• 1st offense- $50 with one point on license
• 2nd offense- $100 with two points on license
• 3rd, etc. offense- $150 with three points on license
There are very simple solutions to avoid this penalty. Enter the address into your GPS, pull up your driving playlist or podcast, and send that “I’m on the way” text before you start the car.
